Garb of Glass II

Date

2021

Materials and processes

Cast glass, sheet glass, hot glass working, twine, photography

I wanted to use glass as clothing material for this work. I often think about women's clothing and experiences with it. Some of my own have been empowering and some disrespectful. I wanted to use glass as a metaphor for how a woman might feel because of her attire as well as the unavoidable encounters with lookers.

After making and trying on the wearables, I photographed my friends in them and asked how they felt. Here are their and my thoughts. My initial caution about making and wearing them was replaced with a sense of empowerment because it felt like wearing armor. Despite glass being sharp and see-through, the construction of the wearable made us less concerned about being hurt and more mindful of its possibility for self-defence. I was worried it might be uncomfortable, but the glass’s sturdiness made it almost more comfortable, and its fragility made it feel precious.
