My hair, performance
Hair, an intrinsic part of our identity, carries genetic imprints through Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), inherited solely from the mother. This links me directly to my maternal lineage.
In my family, hair braiding transcended school requirements and became a cherished ritual. My mother braided my hair daily at 8:30 am, just as her mother did for her, symbolizing our bond and continuity.
In this performance art piece, I use my hair to create portraits of myself, my mother, and my grandmother holding each other's braids. Set to music we listened to during our braiding sessions, it demonstrates how hair connects us scientifically, culturally, and personally—we are three strands of the same braid.
