In school, I was taught about the Maratha Empire that rose in Maharashtra in the 17th century. Born and brought up in the same state, this history taught to me was subjective, one that celebrated them without addressing the looting and damage that they caused to locals in other parts of the country.
Inspired by this, I wanted to create a work that addresses how history and narration of any information is usually one part of the story depending on who is telling it and where you are in the world. So, one side of the work shows the prosperity of the Maratha Empire and the celebrated history that was taught to me. The other side shows the destruction they caused in other parts of India, a dark history that I was not taught. You can interact with this work, rotate the panels to see both sides and mix them up together, prompting you to think about your interaction with the histories as well as their interaction with each other.
