In India’s relentless summer heat, mangoes carry me through the season becoming the sun of my summer. In my home, they are part of familiar rituals: slicing them, licking the chaal and gotli, making payri poochu to suck the last of the juice, making aamras, or eating kaapeli keri with shrikhand.
These acts mark time in a way that feels more real than hours on a clock. This work takes the form of a functional equatorial sundial calibrated to Mumbai, with a knife replacing the gnomon, tying the act of cutting directly to the act of time keeping. Placed on a mango packing box, it points not to hours, but to moments: when to slice, squeeze, mix and share!
