In this work, I turn myself into a “biochemical physicist” and propose a new unit of distance: one glass of chaash. I created this performance piece when I was away from home and suddenly realised how central chaash is to every meal there, and how far away from that I felt. In my pitch, I argue that measuring in chaash lets you choose your unit by taste (an ode to the history of subjective measurement), travel without getting up, so you can be “closer to home,” and explain various phenomena like how my brother is faster than me because he drinks more chaash and so, he covers more distance.
The performance now lives as a pocket-sized 8-page zine that contains my full pitch in the form of a “thesis”, my fake credentials at the “International Bureau of Foods and Measures,” and when you unfold it, a recipe. It ends with an instruction and a promise: Make and drink a glass while you read, and you’ll be one chaash glass closer to wherever you want to be in the world.
